With dndbeyond now updated and books arriving to gaming shelves we wanted to share a quick guide to the new rules so you can dive into your next session with ease.

Heroic Inspiration
Inspiration has evolved into Heroic Inspiration with a more practical use. Now, when you have Heroic Inspiration, you can reroll any die immediately after rolling it – but you must take the new roll.
If you gain Heroic Inspiration and already have it, you can pass it to another player who doesn’t have it, otherwise, it’s lost. This gives more opportunities for teamwork at the table.
Simplified Exhaustion
The Exhaustion condition has been streamlined and is now more predictable. Here’s how it works:
- Exhaustion Levels: Each point of Exhaustion adds a level. At level 6, your character dies.
- d20 Tests: For every Exhaustion level, you subtract 2 times the level from any d20 roll you make (e.g., -2 at level 1, -4 at level 2).
- Speed: Your movement speed is reduced by 5 feet per Exhaustion level (e.g., -5 feet at level 1, -10 feet at level 2).
- Recovery: Completing a Long Rest removes one Exhaustion level.
Surprise Reworked
If a creature is caught off guard when combat begins, they’re Surprised. In the new 2024 rules, this simply means the creature has Disadvantage on their Initiative roll – a much cleaner mechanic than in previous editions. No more worrying about losing an entire turn.
Backgrounds and Ability Scores
Backgrounds now play a major role in character creation, granting you ability score increases instead of species. You can still distribute them flexibly, with options to increase one ability by 2 and another by 1, or all three by 1. Backgrounds also offer new Origin Feats for added customization and power at the start of your character’s journey.
Weapon Mastery and Martial Classes
The Weapon Mastery system makes combat more exciting for martial characters. Different weapons now come with unique abilities like “Cleave” for hitting multiple enemies or “Slow” to reduce movement speed. This change is all about making your weapon choices feel more impactful, letting you adapt to various combat situations.
Feats Are Now Core
Feats have leveled up in importance. They’re no longer an optional rule set, with players gaining access to them more frequently and in different forms (like Origin Feats). Plus, Feats now offer ability score improvements, giving you more flexibility in how you build your character.
Updated Crafting Rules
Crafting is more integral to gameplay, with tools now tied to specific abilities and usable in more creative ways. For example, Cobbler’s Tools let you track footprints when combined with an Investigation check. Proficiency with tools gives bonuses, and crafting items like potions and scrolls is much easier to handle within the game.
Spell Changes
The spell list has been expanded to nearly 400 spells, with some getting tweaks (Counterspell is a bit less powerful now), while others are entirely new, like Yolande’s Regal Presence.
Class-specific spellcasting, like Warlocks’ invocations, has also been updated to feel more balanced and flexible.
